Newborn babies who are unsettled may benefit from skin to skin contact, lots of cuddles and possibly swaddling.

With just a few small and easy adjustments in your diet, you and your baby can get the most out of breastfeeding.

Although the body will still create breast milk that is perfect for your baby even if you eat unhealthy food, if you don’t eat right, you will be sacrificing your own health, and that won’t be good for baby either.

When you don’t get the nutrients you need from your diet, your body will draw on its reserves, which can eventually become depleted. Also, you need strength and stamina to meet the physical demands of caring for a new baby.

Many mums feel extra hungry while breastfeeding, which makes sense – your body is working around the clock to make breast milk for your baby. Eating small meals with healthy snacks in between (the way you may have done during pregnancy) is a good way to keep your hunger in check and your energy level high.

Don’t be in a rush to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight and restrict calories while you’re nursing, especially in your first two months. While the quality of your milk should be good, the quantity of your milk could be affected with too few calories in your diet. It happens that ‘lack of milk supply’ is one of the most common reasons women give as to why they stop breastfeeding earlier than planned.

Count on taking ten months to a year to return to your pre-pregnancy weight.

Avoid alcohol – while the occasional social drink is alright, know that alcohol will enter your bloodstream and affect your milk letdown reflex even if you’ve just had one glass.

Limit caffeine – if you drink more than 300-500mg of caffeine – 5 or more cups of coffee a day – then your baby might ingest more caffeine than he or she can metabolize. It may not keep him awake, as that is not how caffeine affects children, but it will shorten his sleep, which may will impair your baby’s proper growth and development. The effects of caffeine vary from baby to baby so you’ll do best to monitor any affect it has on your child.

Of course, caffeine is also found in energy drinks, teas, chocolate and softdrinks.

Hydration – naturally, avoid dehydration! Drink more fluids: water, soup, or juice. You need to replace all that water that comes out of your body as breast milk.

As both alcohol and caffeine have a mild diuretic effect you won’t want to be peeing out all the water you need to breast feed with. It also won’t be settling if you need to go to the bathroom three times while you’re breastfeeding.

If you think a particular food has affected your baby, you could try cutting it out for a few days to see if it makes a difference. It’s thought that vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and onions, as well as cow’s milk and chocolate can cause colic symptoms.

Be alert for allergies. If your baby gets rashes after you’ve eaten something, or if breathing becomes labored, or stools turn green, your baby might be allergic to the food you’ve consumed. Stop eating it immediately and get your child to your pediatrician to be examined.

If you need additional help in terms of breast milk collection and storage, you can trust Philips Avent with its high-speed no-pain breast pumps and easy-to-clean breast milk storage cups.

Philips Avent has developed the ISIS line of products to help mothers ease the delivery of breast milk and provide comfort and convenience when breastfeeding

ISIS is a breakthrough in breast pump design; it simulates a baby’s suckling pattern, helping mothers naturally produce milk faster than other breast pumps.

The ISIS’ Let-Down Massage cushion found in all Philips Avent breast pumps makes expressing milk more comfortable. The ISIS breast pump is so gentle that it alleviates common problems as engorgement or cracked nipples.

Mothers can choose from different varieties of breast pumps to suit their lifestyle:

The ISIS Manual Breast Pump is available in an Out and About set that is ideal for travel.

The Philips Avent Electronic Breast Pump, on the other hand, is packed with hi-tech features; it allows mothers to control the pump’s speed and rhythm to make expressing more comfortable.

The smart thing about the electronic pump is that it learns from the mother’s actions and continues her personal pumping rhythm, for gentler, more efficient expressing.

To make transporting breast milk safe and easy, Philips Avent offers an insulated travel bag equipped with breast pump and cooling pads. This is perfect for working mothers who need to express milk while at work or for family trips when mums cannot breastfeed their babies.

Philips Avent also offers specially designed sterilized containers that fit perfectly into the pump for direct expressing and storage, making sure that breast milk is safe for babies to consume.

Completing the product range are breastfeeding accessories like breast pads, breast shells, moisturizing nipple cream, and the clinically proven effective Nipplette to ensure the mother’s comfort.

Getting your baby onto solid foods can be a difficult process. We’ve got Doctor’s answers to the key questions to help make it easier.

When should you start thinking about moving your baby onto solid foods?

There’s no real black and white answer to that. Babies and mothers need to make their own decision. Doctors talk about baby-lead weaning and mother-lead weaning. Many babies will start to refuse breast milk and decide they need the added sustenance of solids

In general terms, babies can cope with solids after about 6 months, so most mothers will be introducing solids about then. It’s not unusual to breast & bottle feed through to 2 years.

Is it more difficult to take a baby from breast to solids or from bottle to solids?

A lot of women will actually transition from breast to bottle and then onto solids. However, some babies may just not like bottles and will end up spending a lot more time on the breast before weaning.

What are some things women can do to make the process easier?

The biggest thing is to try and have a plan and try and wean slowly. Then it becomes a nice slow transition for the baby in getting use to dropping a breast feed for a solid feed – for example, you might start with dropping one feed per week so that the weaning process is stretched out over weeks.

If you’re still breast feeding at two years, then wean might take a little longer – maybe months to get that child into a new routine.

Is a there a time when a baby should no longer be breast or bottle fed?

It’s such a personal thing – there are even women who cannot breast feed because they cannot make enough milk. As long as the baby is getting the nutrition and the protective elements supplied from good nutrition the baby will develop well.

Of course, a great advantage of breast milk is the anti-bacterial elements that strengthen a baby’s immunity.

Pumping your breasts for milk is not as easy as it sounds. Here are a few steps to help make pumping a little easier.

Relax. Just like breastfeeding your baby, you need to be relaxed to allow your milk to be released.

When pumping, milk ends up all over the breasts. Pull out your breast from the cup and allow the milk to drop into the bottle.

While the suction is going, massage your breast all over. Feel for swollen glands and give them a gently squeeze. Take a little breather from the machine and pull your breast out. Massage the areola with your middle finger and thumb while squeezing towards your nipple. Aim for the bottle– every drop counts!

While your nipple is inside the suction tube, observe it’s exact placement. Is it in the center? Is it rubbing the top of the the tube? Every couple of minutes take your breast out of the suction tube and give your nipple a quick squeeze. Place your nipple back inside but a little more to the right or left. Try letting your nipple rub the top or point down in the suction tube . By doing this, it allows other mammary glands to be pulled on which means more milk at the bottom of the bottle.

Using Lansinoh (nipple cream) when you are done is very helpful. It helps relieve some of the soreness.
